This position requires full-time presence at our Centurion, South Africa office.

Alaris Antennas, a subsidiary of the Alaris Holdings Group, is seeking a highly motivated and skilled Mechanical Technician to support our R&D team in the design, prototyping, testing, and refinement of new mechanical systems and products. The ideal candidate will have strong hands-on technical skills, experience working with complex mechanical assemblies, and a passion for innovation and problem-solving in a fast-paced research environment.

Required Skills

  • Minimum education: Diploma, certificate, or associate degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Mechatronics, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years' experience in a product development lifecycle, from concept to prototype.
  • Proficient in the use of 3D printing equipment and additive manufacturing tools.
  • Understanding of materials science, including metals, plastics, and composites.
  • Knowledge of pneumatic, hydraulic, or electromechanical systems.
  • Experience in the Defence industry and familiarity with certification processes is advantageous.
  • Computer literacy: Advanced skills in MS Excel and MS Word; proficient in eDrawings; familiarity with Microsoft Dynamics NAV is beneficial.
  • Excellent communication skills: must be able to communicate effectively with clients and team members across varying educational backgrounds.
  • Strong organisational skills: comfortable managing multiple projects, meetings, and deadlines.
  • Effective time-management skills with the ability to prioritise tasks and adapt to schedule changes.
  • Self-motivated and goal-driven with a proactive approach to responsibilities.
  • Skilled in mechanical assembly, fitting, and fabrication techniques.
  • Capable of interpreting technical drawings and CAD models (e.g., SolidWorks, Inventor).
  • Familiarity with basic electronics and instrumentation is considered a plus.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and keen attention to detail.

Responsibilities

  • Prototype Assembly & Modification: Assist engineers in assembling, modifying, and debugging mechanical prototypes and test rigs.
  • Machining & Fabrication: Perform precision machining and fabrication tasks, ensuring quality and adherence to design specifications.
  • Technical Interpretation: Accurately interpret mechanical drawings, CAD models, and technical documents.
  • Design & Testing Support: Support the development and testing of components, including housings, mounts, and fixtures.
  • Test Execution & Data Collection: Set up and run mechanical and environmental tests, record results, and report findings.
  • Troubleshooting & Diagnostics: Identify and resolve issues during the prototype development and testing stages.
  • Design Iteration Collaboration: Work with design engineers to provide feedback and help refine designs based on test results.
  • Workshop Maintenance & Safety: Maintain workshop equipment, calibrate tools, and enforce compliance with safety and industry standards.
  • Experimental Setup & Instrumentation: Assist in setting up test benches and instrumentation, including data acquisition systems.
  • Material Sourcing & Inventory Management: Manage mechanical parts inventory and coordinate with procurement for R&D supplies.
  • Documentation Contribution & Redlines: Support the development of assembly instructions and procedures, providing redlines and feedback for clarity and accuracy.
